Requirement of Sodium in human body
Importance of Sodium:
Sodium is represented by the symbol Na. This is a mineral which is usually taken more or less in its pure form and also in addition to the amounts present in foods. All other minerals except Sodium Chloride are present in sufficient amounts in a balanced diet. Sodium is easily absorbed in the small intestine. Sodium is lost during exercise or in hot environment through sweat. Sodium Chloride also known as table salt and we take it in our diet in the form of salt.2.4 grams of Sodium is found in 6 grams of Sodium Chloride.

Animal: milk π₯, egg whiteπ₯ , fish π , meat π₯π.
Function:
Sodium plus ion is present abadundantly in the extra cellular fluid of human body. Sodium plus ion acts with other electrolytes, especially potassium ion in the extra cellular fluid to regulate the osmotic pressure and maintain proper water balance within the body.
Sodium ion maintains acid-base equilibrium in transmitting nerve impulses and in relaxing muscles. It helps in maintaining normal mineral content of extra cellular π² and intracellular fluid.
Requirements:
Sodium Chloride requirement for the body depends upon various factors such as the climatic condition, occupation that the individual is associated with and how much physical activity the person is doing.
If a person is involved in doing light work then 10-15 gram in a day. For hard to heavy work 15-20 gram in a day. Children should be restricted within 5-10 gram in a day and adolescents 10-15 grams in a day.
Deficiency:
Deficiency may occur by excessive sweating, prolonged use of diuretics, chronic diarrhoea etc. Due to deficiency it may lead to nausea, muscular weakness, heat exhaustion and mental apathy.
In contrast when too much of Sodium is taken it can lead to high blood pressure and even stomach ulcer.
