Requirement of Calcium in human body

Introduction:

Calcium is denoted by the symbol Ca. It is one of the major elements found in human body. An adult man weighing 60 kg has nearly 1 kg of Calcium in the body. Almost 99% of body's Calcium is found in the hard tissues of the body such as bones and teeth. Vitamin D plays vital role for the absorption of Calcium.

Rich sources: Milk and leafy vegetables like amaranth, fenugreek, drumstick etc.
Good sources: Ragi, small fishes.

Function:

Calcium plays essential role in the formation of bones and teeth. Calcium is also known own to be a good clotting agent. Calcium helps enhancing the permeability of capillary walls. Calcium is essential for contraction of heart and muscle. Excitability of nerve and heart muscles are regulated by Calcium. Calcium acts as an activator for the enzymes present in the gastric juice. Calcium is required for proper foetal growth and accelerates all healing process. Maintenance of overall health is one of the main functions of Calcium. It is essential for proper utilisation of Vit A,C,and D.

Calcium requirements of children are equal or more than that of adults. So diet of children should include larger amounts of food rich in Calcium such as milk, green leafy vegetables etc than that of adults. Expectant and nursing mothers should also be given higher amount of Calcium.
Vitamin D and sunshine also help in formation of Calcium in the body.
Man- 0.8 grams per day.
Woman-0.8 grams per day.
Pregnant woman- 1.5 grams per day
Lactating mother- 1.0 grams per day
Children- 0.7 to 1.0 grams per day.
Adolescents- 1.0 grams per day.

Bone mass is reduced. Diseases like Rickets in children, Osteomalacia in adults, Osteoporosis in old age. Decreased growth rate. Decay of teeth and excessive bleeding due to delayed clotting.
